Mitchell Robinson
MSK & Sports Physiotherapist
Your running assessment will be conducted by Mitchell Robinson. Mitch combines his clinical MSK expertise with a deep understanding of running biomechanics to keep local runners out of the clinic and on the pavement.
Why Get a Running Assessment?
Treating running injuries requires more than just telling you to take two weeks off. If you don’t address the underlying mechanics, the pain will just come right back the next time you hit the road.
Breaking Down the Mechanics
A comprehensive running assessment breaks your stride down frame by frame. We look at your cadence, foot strike, joint angles, and ground reaction forces to find out exactly where your body is leaking energy or overloading tissue. We map your technique directly to your symptoms.
Capacity & Strength: You Can’t Fire a Cannon from a Canoe
It’s not just about how you move; it’s about what your muscles can handle. We use dynamometry to objectively measure the strength of your calves, quads, and glutes. If your tissue capacity doesn’t match your training volume, injury is inevitable. We find the deficits and build a plan to fix them.
Common Running Injuries We Treat
- Plantar Fasciitis — sharp heel pain, especially during the first few steps in the morning.
- Achilles Tendinopathy — stiffness and pain in the Achilles tendon, often related to load spikes or poor calf capacity.
- Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain) — aching around or behind the kneecap, typically worsened by downhill running or stairs.
- IT Band Syndrome — sharp pain on the outside of the knee, often linked to over-striding or pelvic drop.
- Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) — pain along the inner edge of the shinbone, common in newer runners or those who rapidly increase mileage.
- Bone Stress Injuries — localized, deep bone pain requiring careful offloading and gradual return-to-run protocols.

Clinical History & Load Analysis
Every successful assessment starts with a thorough understanding of your current training. We don’t just look at how you run; we look at how much you run.
- Training Load: We analyze your weekly mileage, intensity distribution, and recent training changes (the most common cause of running injuries).
- Footwear & Injury History: We assess your current running shoe rotation and how your past injury history might be influencing your current movement patterns.
2
Objective Strength & Capacity Testing
Running places repetitive load on your body. If your muscles don’t have the capacity to handle that load, injury is inevitable.
- Dynamometry: We use handheld dynamometry to measure the exact peak torque of your quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. No manual guesswork.
- Calf Capacity: The calves absorb massive amounts of force during running. We conduct specific endurance and power tests to ensure your lower leg is up to the task.
3
Slow-Motion Video Gait Analysis
We put you on the treadmill and capture your running mechanics from multiple angles using high-speed video.
- Biomechanical Breakdown: We analyze your foot strike pattern, cadence (step rate), over-striding, and pelvic control (drop).
- Actionable Cues: We translate the data into simple, actionable cues that you can take straight to your next run, instantly improving efficiency and reducing joint load.
Frequently Asked Questions
A comprehensive Running & Gait Analysis takes 60 minutes. This gives us ample time to discuss your history, perform objective strength testing, record and review your slow-motion treadmill video, and build a targeted recovery or performance plan.
Please wear your standard, comfortable running gear (shorts/leggings and a t-shirt/singlet). Most importantly, bring the running shoes you currently use (even if they are old or worn down, as the wear pattern tells us a lot), along with any orthotics you might use.
Absolutely not. While we specialize in treating running injuries, a gait analysis is incredibly valuable for runners looking to improve efficiency, transition safely to a new running style, increase their weekly mileage, or prepare for a marathon without breaking down.
Yes! A running and gait assessment is billed as an extended Physiotherapy consultation. If you have active extras cover for Physiotherapy, you can claim a rebate on the spot.
